Zero-trust Security and Microsoft Education Solutions in K-12

How do schools provide the appropriate level of security at the right time for the right security scenario without impacting the end-user experience? Schools are increasingly the target of malware and other cyberattacks and Microsoft solutions help IT staff, in adopting a Zero-trust mindset that assumes breaches, limits access to data by default, and verifies all connections in order for schools to protect their resources. Eric Lankford
Eric is a cybersecurity professional with twenty years of experience in information security. He has worked in many different verticals including banking, multinational retail, multinational pharmaceutical, higher ed and K12 education. An advocate of advancing cybersecurity maturity, he serves as a leader for change in the space, having led the call for security collaboration among school districts since 2018. Eric is also an NYU Cyber Fellow at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering
Ann McMullan
Project Director for CoSN’s EmpowerED Superintendents Initiative
Ann served as Executive Director for Educational Technology in Klein ISD, near Houston, Texas until September 2013, when she and her family moved to Los Angeles, California. For 16 years Ann led the district team that provided professional development on technology and 21st-century instructional strategies to 4,000 educators serving 50,000 students. She was co-chair of the Texas Education Technology Advisory Committee which developed the Texas Long-Range Plan for Technology. Today, Ann works as a public speaker, writer, and education consultant focused on leadership to meet the needs of today’s students. Ann serves on the edWeb.net Advisory Board, ClassLink’s Senior Advisors Group, and is a founding member of ERDI’s Ed Leader Alliance. She also volunteers as a leadership consultant with the Executive Service Corps of Southern California, serving non-profit associations. Ann is the co-author of Life Lessons in Leadership, available on Amazon.com.
Emily Bell
A 25+ year Georgia educator certified and experienced in all K-12 grade levels who plans and implements innovative technology strategies for optimal productivity and increased student achievement. A 20+ year education technology leader who supports the seamless and secure use of reliable network equipment, enterprise platforms, and data visualizations to facilitate the strategic goals and objectives of the district. Other leadership positions include the national IMS Global K-12 Institutional Leadership Board, Microsoft K-12 Advisory Board, Georgia Association for Managers in Education Systems board
Caiden Scherer
Security, Compliance, & Identity Technical Specialist at Microsoft
Focusing on end-user experience, he supports K-12 and Higher Education in their journey to protect their students, faculty, and staff from cyber threats, bullying and harassment, and interruptions from learning. Caiden’s passion for protecting students comes from growing up without educational equity in rural Idaho. So when he began pursuing cybersecurity in college, he started working with a local education center for adults and families, many of whom are immigrants. A ransomware attack failed during his time there, but the “What If’s” and the potential impact on the organization changed the course of his career permanently.
Chelsie Thompson
Security Technical Specialist at Microsoft
She is also a doctorate student, professor, and rugby player. Chelsie started her career helping organizations secure their environment by utilizing Microsoft’s platform. She is a former member of Microsoft’s Detection and Incident Response Team. In her role, she was one of the first onsite responders for cybersecurity breaches worldwide, providing thorough investigations for Microsoft customers and partners. When Chelsie is not actively engaged to help customer conquer their security issues, she frequently participates in speaking events to bring awareness to the importance of cybersecurity, while also advocating for increased levels of diversity within the technology field. Chelsie has created Microsoft cybersecurity courses to help ease the understanding of security solutions for professionals, helping them advance their knowledge base and cybersecurity infrastructure.
